Ok that IT guy you talked to was nuts. Unless you have physically connected the computers together or have shared info, emails and documents after your computer was infected, then there is no risk of the other computers being infected. Also, shut down any other computer you have and hide it from your dad if you’re really concerned that he might take it away (If it’s a tower, then just hide the tower. You can get a basic monitor for cheap now).
In terms of fixing your computer, most viruses can be wiped out by reformatting your hard drive. I’m going to to check with my bro who works in IT and has to deal with assholes at work getting viruses on their work computers every single day (……porn sites), what sort of data will be affected and how much a standard re-formatting costs.
If it’s really serious then you may just need a new hard-drive :/

Hello local pseudo IT. Run something like avast if you can get it to boot. Run the fuck out of it. Run the deep scan, run the boot time scan. If that doesn’t catch all of it, you make need to reformat. This can cost you the stuff on your drive.

You don’t need to get rid of all computers!! I’ve gotten viruses before. I am hardwired to our network. It turned out okay. Whoever said that thing is bananas. There are some ways to get information off a hard drive that won’t boot but I don’t know specifically how to do it (I know people who do)

I’m going to say this very clearly: the person over the phone wasn’t wrong, but they’re an idiot. It is of course possible for the viruses to spread, but it’s not exactly going to do much if dealt with quickly. Also, it really depends on the “virus” in question. Is it a trojan? A work? Both of those work very differently.

A good anti virus software, preferably free (Avast is my preference) can go a long way here. If the computer is still bootable, just run some anti virus scans and it should clean up most of it. Someone with some experience cutting out viruses can help clean up any leftovers (yo! I’ve done some of that before and am happy to help). Keeping the anti virus up will avoid it happening, as well.

If the computer doesn’t boot, it’s a bit tougher to backup data but not impossible. It’s easier with tower computers than with laptops, but still do-able. If you’re running Windows Vista or later, it’s a fairly simple process; there’s a repair suite on the install disc, so it should be easy enough to recover from there (at least to the point where the system boots, then everything else is MUCH easier to fix/save).

And, ultimately, reformatting will fix the problem entirely. No virus is surviving that.

In for( ){ };, there is no beginning or end to the game, just collecting and wandering, birthing and consuming, an arbitrary point system rising until your inevitable death and the birth of another generation. It is a game mechanism without the game. An addictive but essentially aimless experience.
The piece is a triptych of playable acrylic paintings, controlled by the viewer using a NES controller.

Anyone reading this will probably hear at least one other version of this story, if only piecemeal from MsAether and MCXI live blogging the ordeal. Needless to say, I am the third in the trio of road-weary Torontonians that made their way down to 221bcon.

Altogether, there were I think maybe 6 Canadians (less than 1% of the con population), of which we comprised half. So, we quickly became somewhat con-famous with our tale of woe. I’m going to talk about it and the con, so this will be a long read more.

TLDR; don’t fly Air Canada if you can avoid it, and the con was fantastic!

The whole story starts on Thursday, 3:30PM, when we head out to the airport. Already we knew the 4PM flight to Atlanta was cancelled, but our 8:40PM flight was still due to be on time.
Fast forward to 8:05, boarding time. MCXI happens to check the schedule on their phone app and oh no! The flight appears to be cancelled! We don’t actually hear as much from Air Canada until a couple of minutes later. At which point, the fun REALLY begins.

First, we were instructed to get assistance at gate 160. This was incorrect. The gate is F60, but I can see how that might have been misunderstood. Probably my fault, that one. We get to the customer service desk and are waiting in line for assistance. Shortly afterward, we are told that no, this desk will not help us.

Glossing over a few details, a bout of rudeness from the staff, and some misinformation, we get our checked baggage and pass back through customs into Canada. At this point, MCXI takes the reigns and calls to get us rebooked. Air Canada decided to book us on a flight the next morning that they were pretty certain would be cancelled.
This…did not go over well. BUT, MCXI called Big Daddy and we pretty quickly decided “fuck it, let’s just drive. It’s only 14 hours”. We had enough time for Big Daddy to pack (took him about 10 minutes, mind) and pick us up at the airport for us to cancel the flight, stock up on some road trip provisions, inform the hotel of our altered booking time (being on our end of the phone, I’ll say this much: it took a stupidly long time to get it through that we wouldn’t be there that night), and book a room in one of the overflow hotels. Now, we’re off!

I honestly slept through at least half the 4 hour drive to Windsor (where we stopped for what can be properly termed a long nap - about 3 hours of sleep), but it was COLD. And there was freezing rain, so that at some point while driving the car actually had a thin layer of ice on it. This does not bode well.

Thankfully, we get a bit of sleep and head on through the border without any issue. At least until Michigan. Note to drivers going through Michigan on the I-75: there is a nasty pot-hole that may or may not cause your tire to flatten. We stopped to get that replaced, but this trip keeps getting better and better. (McSexy informs me we only NOTICED it in Michigan, but it happened out of Windsor)

Fast forward again several hours (all told, we’ve been on the road for 24 hours now) and we get to the hotel! Hurrah! There were some room troubles, but we persevered and got enough sleeping space for the 3 of us. We also ran into friends we were meeting there, so the fun times could also begin in earnest Friday night.

Phew, start of the convention. On the first day we had exactly four things planned:

Elementary panel
Birth of the Detective Novel panel, while MsAether was in a Fan Art panel.
Ethics and Legality of Fan Fiction panel
Fan Fiction Workshop

Five, if you count generally hanging out with stupidly awesome people. That includes just about everyone at the con, bee tee dubs.

The first panel was…interesting. I think two of the people were pretty excellent and had well-thought out things to say (of 4 people). The (I assume) moderator was unfortunately somewhat rail-roaded, and probably soft-spoken in general to boot, so they didn’t get a chance to really moderate. Hopefully other panels went better for them.

Birth of the Detective Novel was a lot of fun. I love how humble everyone seems to be. Here you had the amazing MCXI with a doctorate student and an actual professor. That is pretty awesome. All 3 had very interesting things to say about the history of detective fiction, with MCXI trying valiantly to take us through the entire breadth of the history in an hour. AbundantlyQueer was in the audience and I think added quite nicely to the discussion.

Ethics and Legality of Fan Fiction was, in my opinion, excellent. MCXI was joined on that one by a Baker Street Babe and a very dapper artist, who was also one of the few dealers (sorry, I don’t remember the name!). Also in attendance was one of the other Canadians - a Boot Maker. In short: I have nothing but respect for people who write fan fiction. You are largely an underground group, a band of rebels against the established laws of the land. You are heroes in a lot of ways and should be proud of that. I hope that the entire fiction community, be it written or film, can come to grips with fan fiction and make it actually legal. For a lot of people it’s an outlet of creativity; to be squashed by someone just for expressing love of a character or a world is sad. I, for one, would like to see that stop happening, within reason.

The Fan Fiction Workshop was hella fun. The group I was in was somewhat rowdy, but we got to speak to 3 of the authors present. Everyone had a different take on writing and it was refreshing to get to see into the minds of these authors. I’m not a writer myself, so some of it was a little out of my wheel house, but it was fun all the same. It was also PACKED and I’m glad for it.

I forgot to mention another Saturday evening panel! Zhelly and Tobie did an excellent job in their in-character Q&A. I am thoroughly impressed, partly because some of the audience was, well, forceful. I particularly liked the Molly cosplayer who schooled Jim, and the John cosplayer who interacted quite well non-verbally with Seb.

Sunday was somewhat less eventful. More just hanging out with people, but it was a good second day for the con. I’m glad that mylittlecornerofsherlock got their Sherlocks-in-a-corner pic! We also made a second excursion to Farm Burger, which I think has changed MsAether’s life a little bit (seriously, if you’re ever in Dunwoody I recommend visiting. It is FANTASTIC food).

On Monday we (that is, the three of us plus Big Daddy) went to visit the world of Coke (go in thirst - trust me) and the aquarium (SO COOL). We tried to have dinner at the rotating restaurant in the Westin, but decided we were too cool for that scene (psh, the CN Tower is WAY better) and went to Hard Rock instead. I enjoyed riding the MARTA, which does some things I wish the TTC did.

We started out early on Tuesday, driving two thirds of the way, stopping in Findlay. We finally arrived today, mid-day. It was a helluva trip, taken spur of the moment. It was frought with frustration and hardship. There was glorious success and fun times, enclosed by tediousness. It was, all told, exceedingly fun.

10/10, would do again.
